Steve Turre

Updated: November 25, 2008

Those who only know Steve Turre from his years in the Saturday Night Live Band (where he has been a fixture since 1995) are missing out on the other side of Steve. Outside of the show he is one of the top jazz trombone innovators. He's earned his chops during over 25 years of touring with bands such as Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He's also noted for his artistry playing conch shells and has trained other players in doing the same.

After many years and increasingly successful albums for the Verve label, Steve switched to Telarc Jazz with his 2000 release In The Spur Of The Moment, his 2001 release TNT, and a tribute to J.J. Johnson called One4J (2003). He has since changed his label affiliation to HighNote records where he so far has recorded three albums as leader.
