Steve Turre, trombone
|

A veteran of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers and the Woody Shaw and Rahsaan Roland Kirk orchestras, Steve Turre has been with SNL since 1985. Only the second permanent trombone player in the band (Tom Malone was the only other), Steve has also made a unique niche for himself as a player of conch shells. About two or three times a season he will play a conch shell on the show. He's toured around the world with other trombone players he has personally trained to play shells; the group is called Sanctifed Shells. He's recorded a number of albums for Verve and Antilles records playing both trombone and shells. With a switch in labels from Verve to Telarc, his concentration has been more on traditional jazz and advancing trombone repertoire. His Telarc albums included "One 4 J", a tribute to the late jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson, a prime influence on Turre's style. His most recent album is "Rainbow People", for High Note records.
