The late 1940's saw the end of many electrified route segments, and
even though some of the newer All-Service Vehicles were converted to diesel-only operation,
PSCT decided to standardize the look of the fleet by specifying
General Motors buses for all future purchases. 1947 saw the final
non-GM bus purchases with a group of Ford 79-B's and Brill C-44's. It
also marked the beginning of PSCT's famous bus numbering scheme of
one letter followed by three numbers, with the letter incrementing each year
(but skipping to J in 1955, bypassing I). All like buses of a certain type were
numbered in systematic fashion, with the 100's and 200's for small transits (the last of
which were acquired in 1952), 300's and 400's for normal transits, 500's for deluxe buses,
600's for parlor buses (PD-4104's starting in 1953) and 700's for suburbans.
Notable of this group of buses
is D900, a valiant but failed attempt to revive the ASV concept for use on the
old Newark City Railway (paving over the tracks and running the buses above and
underground). The plans never came to fruition. Thus, D900 never ran under wire
in revenue and
was later converted to a regular diesel bus, out of Greenville Garage. D900 was the only
new bus on the roster in 1950, but fifteen used buses were acquired along with
Ironbound Transportation Co.
Factory-installed
air conditioning began appearing on 1958 deluxe and suburban buses;
transit-class buses (the 300's) never were air-conditioned.
