Private Snafu

The Private Snafu series of training films was produced by Warner Bros. and shown to soldiers only in the Army-Navy Screen Magazine. Gags and language were racier than usually permitted. These shorts were from three to four minutes long and produced in black and white. Each Warner Bros. director had his shot with the series, and the writers included Phil Eastman and Theodor (Dr. Seuss) Geisel. Titles and directors (assumed) follow.

In addition to the Warner Bros. titles, Snafu also appeared in the following cartoons produced by other studios: A Few Quick Facts: Fear, Inflation (both from Industrial Films, which later became UPA) and Private Snafu Meets Seaman Tarfu (Harman-Ising).

Warner Bros. also produced a series of cartoons for the U.S. Navy featuring the character Seaman Hook. Three recently discovered titles were found in a garage in Virginia. All from 1945, they are The Return Of Mr. Hook (possibly McKimson), The Good Egg (Jones) and Tokyo Woes (Clampett). All three of these cartoons appear on “The Golden Age Of Looney Tunes, Vol. 5”. Take Heed, Mr. Tojo, the title card for which appears in Enchanted Drawings, is actually a Walter Lantz cartoon produced in color in 1943, possibly directed by Hank Ketcham.
