Although the old cartoons continued to be reissued, Warner Bros.
decided to contract with the emergent DePatie-Freleng studio to create 26 new
cartoons, featuring mainly Daffy Duck and Speedy Gonzales. DePatie-Freleng was
creating its own roster of stars for a United Artists release schedule, yet
still found time to create these cartoons listed below for their old bosses.
Friz Freleng directed the first few, then gave the remainder to Robert McKimson
(with one credit going to transplanted New Yorker Irv Spector). The artists were
the same for both sets of cartoons.

The Format Films studio was run by Herbert Klynn (who will also have
a role in the second resurrection of the WB cartoon studio in 1967)
and was responsible for such TV shows as The Alvin Show and The Lone
Ranger. As DePatie-Freleng struggled to keep its commitments to Warner Bros.
and United Artists, the decision was made to send Format Films eleven Road
Runner projects. Rudy Larriva (an ex-WB animator) would direct, and Bill Lava
would fully score one cartoon and create a series of music cues to be dropped
into the succeeding cartoons (using an orchestra which roughly numbered three
musicians). In spite of the presence of some people who actually worked on Road
Runners at WB (namely designer Erni Nordli and animator Bob Bransford), nobody
ever mistook the end product for some of Chuck Jones' more sublime examples of
the series in the 1950's and 1960's. Watch these eleven cartoons and you'll
swear that Warner Bros. censored the wrong eleven films!
