STUDIO HISTORY
The Paramount Pictures Cartoon Studio, operating under the name "Famous Studios" from 1942 to 1956, was the direct successor to Fleischer Studios. Paramount deposed Max and Dave Fleischer from their cartoon studio in 1942, and eventually moved the entire operation back to New York. Sam Buchwald was the production manager, and the original directors were Dan Gordon, Izzy Sparber and Seymour Kneitel, all of whom were influential figures in the later days of the Fleischer Studio. Gordon was the first to leave, heading west to try his luck at other studios. In the late 1940's, Bill Tytla, the skilled Disney animator, lent his directorial hand. At the time, the major characters at the studio were Popeye and Little Lulu. Sammy Timberg at first provided the music, giving way about 1946 to Winston Sharples, who then scored every Paramount cartoon until the studio's closing.
The studio suffered a setback in 1951 when Sam Buchwald died of a heart attack, leaving Kneitel and Sparber to run the place. During the 1950's, the studio developed many star characters like Casper, Herman and Katnip and Baby Huey, while continuing to produce Popeye cartoons. Paramount changed the name of its animation operation to Paramount Cartoon Studios in 1956. Popeye was retired in 1957 and his backlog of films sold to Associated Artists Productions for television use. The next year, the studio endured the loss of two-thirds of its direction team, when Dave Tendlar left the studio for Terrytoons, and Izzy Sparber died. The characters of Casper, Little Audrey, Baby Huey, Herman and Katnip, and a number of minor characters were retired in 1959 when Paramount sold the films and the rights to the characters to Harvey Comics, which had been publishing a successful line of comics based on the Paramount characters.
During the early 1960's Paramount experimented with a series of one-shots, minor starring characters like Swifty and Shorty (created and voiced by Eddie Lawrence), and a huge production commitment from King Features Syndicate for television cartoons starring Popeye, Snuffy Smith, and Beetle Bailey. In 1964, Seymour Kneitel, the studio's sole director from 1958 to 1964, died of a heart attack. Writer Howard Post was tapped as his replacement and mostly kept the status quo, but did let some good ideas make it to the screen such as the "Jacky's Whacky World" series, based on a comic book by writer/artist Jack Mendelsohn, who directed the two films.
Fleischer Studios veteran Shamus Culhane was brought on board to replace Post in 1966. Culhane literally rewrote the book on Paramount cartoons, with new designers and new ideas coming to the fore. Gone were the staid set designs of the likes of Robert Little and Anton Loeb, and staffers like Howard Beckerman, Jerry Lieberman, Dave Ubinas, Gil Miret, Jim Simon and Dante Barbetta filled the screen with bright new designs. Veterans Nick Tafuri and Al Eugster headed the animation department. A lot of Culhane's scripts came from surprising sources - Izzy Klein, Ruth Kneitel (Seymour's widow) and Jim Tyer were those who took story credits under Culhane. The studio also did some subcontract work for Marvel Comics' TV cartoons.
The studio's final creative leader was Ralph Bakshi. The brash young animator and director had made his name at the Terrytoons studio in the 1960's and Paramount gave him a shot. Unfortunately, the timing didn't work in Bakshi's favor - in late 1967, with theatrical cartoons in decline, Paramount shut down its animation studio, with Bakshi only completing four films - "The Fuz", "The Mini-Squirts", "Marvin Digs" and "Mouse Trek", indicating the more modern tack Paramount would have taken with material and execution.
