Comic Kings

The Comic Kings series (also known as King Features Trilogy) consisted of fifty cartoons each of Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, Beetle Bailey, and Krazy Kat. For each series, one or more pilot films were made from 1960-1962. Some of these were released theatrically by Paramount, one of the studios involved in the development of these series. Additionally, two Little Lulu cartoons were piloted at Paramount Cartoon Studios and theatrically released, but never developed into a new series. Executive Producer for all these cartoons is again Al Brodax.

Barney Google And Snuffy Smith

Great balls of fire! These hillbillies are in for some bodacious fun. Jack Kinney produced the pilot in 1961, and Paramount produced the balance of the cartoons, with theatrical releases in 1962 kicking off the series. The first three Paramount cartoons - "Snuffy's Song", "The Method and Maw" and "The Hat" - form a story arc. Paul Frees and GeGe Pearson did the voices.

Beetle Bailey

Mort Walker's hapless private was translated to animation. Joe Oriolo and Pat Sullivan, Jr. produced the first pilot, with a second pilot done at TV Spots in Hollywood. Series production was split between Paramount Cartoon Studios and Artransa Park Studios in Australia, with producer Gerry Ray, director Geoff Pike and many of the same animators who would later work on "The Beatles" cartoon show and "Yellow Submarine" for producer Al Brodax. Voice tracks were recorded in Hollywood, but oddly, none of the animation was produced there.

Theme Music: Livingston and Evans - Voices (uncredited): Allan Melvin, Howard Morris, and June Foray.

All the Beetle cartoons were released on DVD in 2007.
